On Twitter, police bosses said they “regret the death” of state policeman Eduardo, “who lost his life on Wednesday in the capital of Sinaloa.”
Eduardo, 32, joined the force six years ago.
It is unclear if the police officer was on duty at the time of the attack although he was reportedly carrying a gun with him.
But according to local media, the murdered man was a member of the operation launched by the Culiacan authorities to arrest El Chapo’s son and extradite him to America.

Info Bae reports that 155 bullet casings were found surrounding the killed officer.
It adds that his body was left inside a white Nissan in the car park of a commercial plaza in Las Moras.
On the Sinaloa Public Security’s Facebook page, tributes were paid to the slaughtered man, with one woman saying that he was a “good person, good son, good father and husband, [who was] hardworking.”
One grieving relative added: “We will always remember you as a great cousin.”
Public security secretary Cristobal Castaneda Camarillo and his undersecretary Hernandez Leyva both showed up at the crime scene to supervise the investigation.

The local authorities are investigating the murder, and whether a criminal gang was behind the alleged assassination.
His brutal slaying comes days after the botched attempt to capture Ovidio Guzman Lopez – one of El Chapo’s sons, also known as “Little Chapo”.
Outgunned Mexican security forces were forced to abort their arrest on October 17 when cartel henchmen fought back in Culiacan, the stronghold of the Sinaloa cartel, turning the streets into a war zone.

Ovidio was freed as police were outgunned by heavily armed cartel gangsters, who left bodies strewn in streets and torched vehicles burning as frightened residents ran for their lives.
According to The Guardian, prominent drug trafficker Little Chapo is the fifth most wanted fugitive in the world, behind the likes of Boko Haram leader, militant Abubakar Shekau, and Ibrahim Dawood, named as the mastermind of bombings in Mumbai in 1993, killing more than 250 people.
El Chapo’s 28-year-old son Ovidio is accused of drug trafficking in the US.
His infamous dad is serving a life sentence in America after being convicted last February of industrial-scale drug trafficking.
