Victoria has recorded 75 new cases of coronavirus – the state’s biggest daily figure since March 31.

Health minister Jenny Mikakos said on Monday morning that the state now had 2099 confirmed coronavirus cases.

Ten cases have been linked to the Wollert family outbreak, four have been linked to a new family outbreak in Lysterfield and Pattersons Lakes, and five are a new family outbreak in Truganina.

“We’ve got many cases across the inner northern suburbs and the western suburbs of Melbourne, but not exclusively and it’s important to reiterate to the community that you are not immune from catching coronavirus by virtue of the postcode that you live in,” Ms Mikakos said.

A number of schools have been impacted by new cases.

These are: Queen of Peace Parish Primary School in Altona Meadows; Aitken Hill Primary School in Craigieburn; Fitzroy High School; Port Phillip Specialist School in Port Melbourne; and Al-Taqwa College in Truganina.

The effect of the school closures is minimal however as Victorian schoolchildren are currently on holiday.

In addition, a childcare worker has tested positive at Guardian Early Learning Centre’s Abbotsford site, with deep cleaning now under way.

Victoria’s chief health officer Professor Brett Sutton today addressed the difficulty in locking down the state’s hotspot areas while keeping other suburbs open.

“A (localised lockdown) would be a harder step but it has to be proportionate. We know what the consequences are in terms of fatigue in people positive behaviours,” Mr Sutton said.

“It is absolutely an option and we flagged the possibility of using it and we will use it if it is required.”

When questioned about Victorians just moving to another suburb if their suburb was locked down, Mr Sutton admitted it “was a possibility”.

“It would be part of the new rule, to stay at home, that people would stay in their place of residence,” he said.

“But it would be a significantly difficult exercise to manage a stay at home order that is just about particular postcodes, particular suburbs or local government areas. So we have to think about all of those challenges in doing so.”
